Program #8
Cheap Lecture & The Cow Piece
Saturday, June 27 at 9pm

A chaotic meditation upon dance, music and mortality.  It is a form of making that continues in the practice of performing.

Cheap Lecture and The Cow Piece are a conversation with the structure of John Cage's Lecture On Nothing, at once a homage to and questioning of a way of thinking that has underpinned so much dance and performance in the last thirty years.

Cheap Lecture (2009) is a rhythmic spoken performance set to music. In a rant about empty hands, audience, time, repetition and dancing, veering from the philosophical to the humorous and back, Cheap Lecture gently reveals how the two artists work while drawing us into ever more unexpected digressions: a performance that dances in your head.

The Cow Piece (2009) represents the same structure, testing it to the limit in an attempt to renegotiate the rules we have just heard. Using objects, text, movement and sound, The Cow Piece is a riotous celebration of the limits of logic, where two tables become the staging ground for 12 plastic cows who dance, sing, speak, think, sleep, go, come and die in a series of ritual executions.
